Malawi has an area of 118,000 square kilometres, a significant portion of which is made up by lakes. The largest of these is known as Lake Malawi, and covers a fifth of the country. (Occasionally known as Lake Nyasa outside of Malawi.)
The country boasts several National Parks and game reserves. The largest is Nyika National Park in the north of the country. Also, in the south, there is a unique freshwater National Park.
There is modern and comfortable accommodation available in the major Urban areas. The major attractions, such as the game parks, also all have comfortable accommodation. Elsewhere one can find adequate government run lodges. There are many other attractions to be seen, including Zomba market pictured left.
Malawi also boasts many beautiful peaks and plateaus.
The highlands offer magnificent walks and hikes, with some also accessible by road.
The plateaus in Malawi are home not only to some traditional industries, but also much rare and even unique plant-life.
The climate is sub-tropical, split into three seasons. Rainfall dominates the early part of the year, (starting around November). After peaking in January rain falls intermittently until around April. From May to August the weather is generally cool and dry, (making May/June the ideal time to visit). The heat and humidity then builds from August until the rains come again.
