Malawi Health Care Support UK
|
This event was organised to introduce new members to the activities and members of Malawi Health Care Support UK. Although I have been active in MAHECAS UK recently, I have been unable to attend many meetings recently. As such I decided to go to this family friendly event.
I arrived at about 8pm with two friends from university. Their interest in Malawi comes solely from knowing me, so I was keen to introduce them to others at the event. We paid the very reasonable £10 entry fee, knowing that all profits from the event were going to a good cause. We then got some refreshment from the cheap bar, (just £1.50 for a beer!), and took some seats. The event had deliberately been organised to coincide with the Saturday with the longest daylight hours. As it happens, it was not only light but a very warm and pleasant evening weather wise. Everyone at the event was in good spirits, and we chatted to many (if not all) of the people present.
The charity is concerned with projects in Malawi. However, the beauty of this event is that it attracted a wide variety of people. I had brought two friends who both grew up in the north of England. Despite being born in Malawi, I myself grew up in south-east Essex. There were also people there from Zimbabwe and Ghana, and naturally there were many Malawians. The mix of people added to the great atmosphere in the place.
Later in the evening the food was served. The food was simply amazing, and provided in great quantities. Naturally, I wanted to try a bit of everything. However, the sheer quantity meant this was unfeasible so unfortunately I had to miss out on some of the dishes. The dishes I did try were, without exception, mouth-wateringly delicious. The food alone justified the £10 ticket, (which was just £5 for children). However, also included in the price was a nights worth of musical entertainment.
We were treated to a live drumming performance which got people dancing and clapping with delight. Afterwards we had a DJ playing songs which kept us all dancing until way after sun down. Come midnight, we had all been treated to a great evening. Even though none of us wanted the event to end, we all left extremely contented.
I personally would like to thank all those involved in organising this event. I had a great time, as did my two university friends who said they would definitely be coming to more MAHECAS functions. Congratulations and thank-you, Dzinja Kabambe.
