Malawi - The Warm Heart of Africa

Malawi's Position in Africa The Republic of Malawi is situated in southern Africa, as can be seen in the picture left. Lilongwe, in the centre of the country, is the capital.

As of 1997, Malawi had a population of 9,609,000 projected to rise by a million in 10 years, (details...). The religious breakdown is approximately 50% Christian and 20% Muslim, with traditional and other religions making up the rest. Life expectancy in Malawi is just 36 years, (more...).

Malawi's biggest exports are tobacco, tea and sugar. Most goes to South Africa, Germany, Japan, the United States and Mozambique.

Malawi gained independence from the UK in 1964, (which had ruled the area since 1891). It adopted a constitution in 1966 making it a single party republic. (It was governed by Dr. Kamuzu Banda of the Malawi Congress Party.) A national referendum in 1993 voted to change to a multi-party system On 17th May 1994 the first democratic multi-party elections were held.
